In a hot yoga class that I recently attended, I saw my past self on the mat next to me. She was angry, frustrated and in pain. Even blurted out “She makes me sick” when the instructor asked another student to deepen their fold in Hanuman. I just wanted to hug her and let her know that a dedicated practice will allow you to get there. Oh and smile because you made it to this practice and that is where it all begins.
I have those days also. Don’t wanna get out of bed, don’t want to go to class. Don’t feel like my practice is as pretty as hers. (BTW- What happens on your mat stays on your mat. So try not to compare.) Sometimes I don’t get on the mat and I then I think about it while my husband kicks my but in a round of PS3 golf. “Should have gone to yoga, at least there I’m better than him.” lol
So here are just a few tips on how to be the change.
- First, instead of committing to totally transforming your entire life, think about one or two major focuses you’d like to have this year. It takes 12 weeks to form a habit, so make sure you are committing to only one or two changes at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed or discouraged.
- Next, look at your past history. Have you tried this resolution in the past? Has it worked or not worked? Why? By reflecting on past resolutions and commitments to yourself, you’re able to analyze what went wrong and how this time can be different.
- Finally, make sure you have a support group or team. This can be your family, friends, or an online community. Check in with these people, update them on your successes and difficulties, and celebrate your accomplishments with them!
